One Local Summer

May 12, 2009

It’s been a few days, but this weekend was pure bliss, my camera is charged again, and I’m in the mood for a good fight with the bossman. Plus, I’m flying high from the official start of One Local Summer.

Here’s the shpeel (shpeal?):

As of today (May 12), there are 31 participants from all over the U.S. and one from the UK. So far, the Northeast part of the U.S. has the largest number of participants (rock on, Philly!).

But with the weather finally getting around to being gorgeous, here’s hoping that the second half of May will see many more people joining the challenge – I’m really excited for the challenge of cooking local and scavenging for interesting eats and new items to use in my recipes.

It’s only a few short weeks to the start of the challenge and the kick off of my Summer CSA at Greengrow. The idea of supporting local farmers, the local foodshed, eating seasonally, locavore-ism, Slow Food, etc. has received a lot of press over the last year.

It’s not just the ‘green’ trend, but also an interest in being frugal and the DIY culture. It’s a really exciting time for foodies, and the One Local Summer challenge unveils new resources, new recipes, and new ideas (well, that’s what I’ve always gotten out of it!). Hope you guys are feeling up to the challenge and get on the wagon this summer – and check out Farm to Philly for tons of insights and recipes and motivation (and tips & tricks – like where the f to get ingredient a, b, and c).
