Land of the free…

July 2, 2009

Here’s your special recession-proof Philly beer guide to start your holiday weekend off on a toasty note.

A few friend and I recently did our own Philly brewery tour with stops around the city and beyond. Since making sense of those pictures and my notes from that looooong Saturday is a bit of a process, I wanted to pass on the major breweries on our route – all of which have glorious free tastings every weekend. I’ll find you in on the local micro-brews and other shenanigans of the day when my liver has recovered enough to not fade into ‘Nam-like flashbacks at the mere mention…

Yards Brewing Company
Kick your weekend off with free tours on Saturdays, starting from noon and with the last tour at 3 p.m., at the new Yards brewery at 901 North Delaware Avenue.

Philadelphia Brewing Company
PBC and I go way back since their birthday party where they gave out free beer to the masses. Gots to respect that. Same Saturday noon-to-3 p.m. deal, at the brewery in Kensington.

Victory Brewing Company
Free tours and tastes Fridays and Saturdays at 4 p.m. at the Downingtown brewery. Ladies, leave the flip-flops at home; closed-toe shoes required.

Flying Fish Brewing Company
Saturdays, 1 to 4 p.m., in Cherry Hill — but sometimes the staff’s at special summer events, so FF suggests you e-mail before you visit to make sure they’re open.
