Let’s go to the Old Mill and get some cider!

October 19, 2009
Last night was the Simpson’s Tree House of Horror #20. Yowsa. It was not good, per say, but when you’re camped out after a cold and wet weekend with freeze warnings and other unseasonal shenanigans, it was definitely a flashback to yester year.Crappy Simpson’s episode. Mopey Sunday night. And apple cider. With Spiced Rum. And homemade whipped cream.

Apple cider. Go ahead and try to name something more fall-ish and spectacular (particularly when paired with Spiced Rum and homemade whipped cream). It’s hideously crazy how easy it is to make whipped cream. Reddi-Whip, you are on notice.

Homemade Whipped Cream
1/2 pt. heavy cream or whipping cream
3 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
You can do this by hand – just combine the ingredients in a bowl with high edges and take a deep breath, because it’s 5 high intense minutes of wrist action.Totally doable, but you’ll affectionately pet your mixer the next time you see it. If you go the mixer route, add the heavy cream and beat on medium. Be careful not to over-beat or else will get too thick like butter. When it begins to thicken, add sugar and vanilla; stir, and then refrigerate for up to 3 days.
